El Salvador to Host IAEA Mission for Nuclear Energy Site Selection.

A mission from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will visit El Salvador in May to advise on potential sites for the country’s first nuclear reactor, the General Directorate of Energy, Hydrocarbons and Mines (DGEHM) announced Wednesday.

DGEHM Director Daniel Álvarez stated on Diálogo 21 that the mission will guide the selection of suitable locations for a commercial nuclear plant. The first facility is expected within seven years, alongside the training of 700 operators.

El Salvador began its nuclear plans in 2023 through a partnership with the Thorium Energy Alliance to explore thorium-based reactors. While the fuel type remains undecided, small modular reactors are being considered.

Security is a priority. Last week, officials met with the IAEA to discuss safety measures, with IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi pledging support. El Salvador has also signed a cooperation agreement with the United States.

Álvarez noted that, despite high initial costs, nuclear energy will be a cost-effective solution as geothermal options reach capacity, with returns through energy production, water purification, and workforce development.
