Trademark Applications in El Salvador Soar Amid Tourism Expansion.

El Salvador’s tourism industry is thriving, fueled by improved security that’s attracting entrepreneurs to establish brands and businesses.

According to Camilo Trigueros, Executive Director of the National Registry Center (CNR), over 13,000 trademark applications were filed in 2024, with the tourism sector leading the growth. “Three years ago, tourism didn’t rank among the top ten sectors. Now, it tops the list,” Trigueros stated, highlighting the rise of restaurants, cafés, and hotels.

He credited the increase to President Nayib Bukele’s security initiatives, which have fostered investor confidence. While the pharmaceutical industry traditionally held a strong position, tourism and gastronomy now outpace it.

The new Intellectual Property Law offers a 50% discount on trademark fees, encouraging more registrations. “We’re creating favorable conditions for businesses to formalize their brands,” Trigueros noted.

CNR’s modernization has also improved service efficiency. “Seven out of ten people receive same-day responses, covering over 70% of requests,” he said. In 2024 alone, CNR processed 1.4 million transactions, reflecting steady annual growth of 5% to 8%.

With enhanced security and streamlined services, El Salvador’s tourism and gastronomy sectors continue to drive economic momentum.
