In an effort to enhance road safety, the Government of El Salvador, led by Minister of Public Works Romeo Herrera, has introduced a series of new measures aimed at improving the training and testing of drivers. During a recent meeting with representatives from driving schools and examination companies, Herrera emphasized the importance of proper training to ensure safety for all road users.

“We want to work with all of you, but we want to do it well, to train all drivers in El Salvador and that gives them and other users road safety,” said Minister Herrera.
One of the key reforms is the implementation of a new system for theoretical traffic tests. The Vice Ministry of Transportation (VMT) will develop a secure digital platform where aspiring drivers can access their personal account using a username and password. To ensure transparency, monitoring cameras will be installed during the testing process. The reform will be rolled out in two phases: an initial phase for technological adaptation, followed by a period of standardization and facility improvements.

In addition to these technological changes, the new measures require driving schools and examination companies to meet minimum operating standards. These include:
- Technological adaptation with security mechanisms to prevent identity theft.
- Standardization of the image of facilities.
- Road circuits for practical teaching and evaluations of future drivers.
Driving schools and examination companies will have 90 days to comply with these new provisions.
Minister Herrera also announced that the Government had revoked the operating permits of two examination companies that did not meet the required standards. Additionally, the Sertracen website will now allow users to reschedule their appointments directly with the VMT, simplifying the process for all involved.
These initiatives reflect President Nayib Bukele’s commitment to reinforcing road safety and ensuring that drivers receive the necessary education to navigate the country’s roads safely.
