The Attorney General’s Office of El Salvador has executed the arrest of Eugenio Chicas Martínez, a former government official, on charges of illicit enrichment to the detriment of the Public Administration. Chicas, who will face criminal charges in the coming days, is accused of misappropriating state funds during his time in office.

Chicas, who served as the presiding magistrate of the Supreme Electoral Court from 2009 to 2014, Secretary of Communications of the Presidency, and as a Proprietary Deputy of the Central American Parliament between 2011 and 2021, was also sentenced in November 2024 in a civil court to return more than $200,000 to the state.
President Nayib Bukele continues to push for a strong stance against corruption, emphasizing the government’s commitment to accountability and transparency. Chicas will now be held criminally responsible for his actions, marking another step in El Salvador’s ongoing battle against corruption.
