U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio Kicks Off Regional Tour in El Salvador.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrived in El Salvador this morning as part of his official tour of Central America. His plane landed at El Salvador International Airport, San Óscar Arnulfo Romero y Galdámez, marking the beginning of his first diplomatic visits abroad since taking office.

Upon arrival, Secretary Rubio was welcomed by Salvadoran Foreign Minister Alexandra Hill Tinoco, U.S. Ambassador to El Salvador William Duncan, and Salvadoran Ambassador to the United States Milena Mayorga.

According to the agenda shared by the U.S. Department of State, Rubio’s visit includes a tour of an aircraft maintenance, repair, and operations facility in San Salvador. He will also meet with employees and families of the U.S. Embassy in the country.

A key moment of his stay will be a discussion with Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele and Foreign Minister Alexandra Hill Tinoco, with a private meeting between Rubio and Bukele also scheduled. The leaders are expected to address key issues such as regional security, migration policies, and economic cooperation.

This visit underscores Washington’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with El Salvador, particularly in addressing shared challenges such as transnational crime, economic growth, and migration management. Analysts speculate that discussions may include revisiting a potential “safe third country” agreement, requiring migrants traveling through El Salvador to seek asylum there before reaching the U.S.

Following his engagements in El Salvador, Secretary Rubio will continue his regional tour with stops in Costa Rica, Guatemala, and the Dominican Republic, focusing on deepening diplomatic and security cooperation across Central America.
