Trump and Bukele to Speak Today in First Official White House-Announced Call to a Foreign Leader.

U.S. President Donald Trump is set to hold a phone call with Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele this Thursday at 3:30 p.m. local time in Washington (2:30 p.m. in El Salvador, 8:30 p.m. GMT). This marks the first officially announced conversation with a foreign leader since Trump’s inauguration earlier this week, according to the White House schedule.

The call will follow Trump’s virtual participation in the Davos Forum, a private intelligence briefing, and the signing of new executive orders.

Though the White House formally confirmed this as Trump’s first foreign leader call, his initial outreach was to Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on Wednesday.

Bukele, a vocal advocate for cryptocurrency and tough-on-crime policies, was invited to Trump’s inauguration and shares common ground with the U.S. president on those topics.

Over two million Salvadorans reside in the United States, contributing over $7 billion in remittances annually, a critical boost to El Salvador’s economy.
