El Salvador’s new photo-fine system on the Comalapa highway has shown impressive results, significantly reducing traffic violations. On its first day of operation, the system detected just 28 traffic offenders, a dramatic drop from the 2,500 violations that were recorded daily during the test period. The system, which covers a 34-kilometer stretch with six sensor points, began operating on January 22, 2025.
Vice Minister of Transportation, Nelson Reyes, highlighted the success of the initiative, noting that the drastic decrease in violations was a positive development. “There is a very drastic decrease in the number of offenders that have been reported for speeding, and that seems perfect to me. What we would like to achieve is a day where there is not a single infraction,” Reyes explained during an interview on the radio program Diana VerĂ³nica y Tony.

The photo-fine system has also impacted cargo transportation, with the Vice Ministry of Transportation (VMT) reporting no infractions for overweight vehicles at the two points currently covered by the system. Reyes further shared that despite an increase in anti-doping controls, the number of dangerous drivers detected has decreased, with fewer drivers testing positive for alcohol consumption.
Reyes also reminded all road users that it is their responsibility to keep their personal data updated in the VMT registry, ensuring a smoother process for traffic management and enforcement.
The photo-fine system’s early success marks a step forward in improving road safety and reducing traffic violations in El Salvador.
