El Salvador continues to make significant strides in innovative public infrastructure, connecting communities and promoting progress for its population. The latest project, a new bridge over the Titihuapa River, was recently inaugurated by Minister of Public Works, Romeo Rodríguez Herrera. This new structure benefits residents of San Ildefonso, San Vicente Norte, and Dolores, Cabañas Este.

The previous bridge, a metal structure, had been used by locals to cross the river, but it collapsed multiple times due to floods. «In this place on the Titihuapa River, the bridge has collapsed three times. The first time was during the FMLN guerrilla conflict, the second during Storm 12 E, and the most recent collapse occurred at the end of 2022,» explained Minister Rodríguez Herrera.

Following the most recent collapse, a provisional bridge was placed temporarily, but the government took decisive action to prevent further collapses by building a new, durable structure with an investment of $12 million funded by the World Bank. «The provisional bridge was placed for 45 days, but to avoid another collapse, we built a new bridge,» Rodríguez Herrera confirmed.

The new bridge spans 200 meters across the Titihuapa River, with total work covering nearly 600 meters, including access roads and pedestrian sidewalks. Each lane is 3.6 meters wide, ensuring that even trucks can pass through safely.
Minister Rodríguez Herrera also noted that the old bridge would eventually be removed to avoid any future risks, and the provisional bridge would be reused in other locations. This project marks another important step forward in El Salvador’s commitment to improving public infrastructure and connecting its people.
