The exceptional regime implemented by President Nayib Bukele has earned the support of nearly 90% of Salvadorans, bringing tangible benefits that are reshaping the country. Over the past 32 months, the measure has not only improved security but has also revitalized various sectors of Salvadoran life, making the country one of the safest in the region.ç

One of the most notable effects of the regime has been the restoration of mobility across the country. Prior to the regime, many Salvadorans were restricted in their movement due to gang territories. Neighborhoods like Soyapango, Ilopango, and even parts of San Salvador were divided by criminal groups, leaving citizens feeling trapped. However, with the implementation of the exceptional regime, these barriers have been eliminated, and citizens now roam their neighborhoods freely, without fear.

The regime’s impact on security has also led to an unprecedented boost in tourism. El Salvador is witnessing a surge in both beach and mountain tourism, with thousands traveling to explore the country’s scenic landscapes and historical sites. The safety improvements have made areas like the capital’s Historic Center more accessible, which was previously unimaginable due to gang-related violence.

Small and medium-sized businesses, which make up 90% of the country’s enterprises, have flourished as a result of the regime. No longer burdened by extortion, entrepreneurs in districts such as Apopa and Soyapango are now able to grow their businesses in a more secure environment, contributing to the country’s economic revival.
The regime’s success is further exemplified by the mass arrests of over 83,000 gang members. These actions have not only disrupted illicit activities such as drug trafficking and extortion but have also led to the creation of a special prison for terrorists, Cecot, where 40,000 gang members will serve long sentences. As a result, the country has seen a drastic reduction in homicides, extortions, and other high-impact crimes.

The government’s actions have also included the recovery of thousands of homes that had been usurped by gangs. Over 9,000 homes have been returned to their rightful owners, giving displaced families the chance to live safely once more.
With tourism booming and crime rates plummeting, El Salvador has emerged as a rising star in Latin America, boasting the region’s highest tourism growth rate. International organizations, such as the United Nations Tourism Council, have recognized El Salvador as the fourth fastest-growing destination globally, following Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Albania.

As El Salvador continues its path of transformation, the exceptional regime is proving to be a model for other countries to emulate in the pursuit of greater safety, prosperity, and well-being for their citizens.
