El Salvador has taken a significant step towards the peaceful use of nuclear science and technology with the signing of the National Programmatic Framework 2024-2029 between the Salvadoran Agency for International Cooperation (ESCO) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The agreement, signed by ESCO Director Karla de Palma, outlines a strategic roadmap to enhance the use of nuclear technology across key sectors including health, agriculture, water management, and environmental protection.
The National Programmatic Framework aims to provide Salvadoran institutions, such as the Ministries of Health, Environment, and Agriculture, as well as the Salvadoran Water Authority (ASA), with the tools and expertise to leverage nuclear science for national development. “This is a key step in the consolidation of the peaceful use of nuclear energy for the benefit of our population,” said Karla de Palma. “This framework ensures that technical cooperation projects align with the national priorities defined by the Government.”
Among the expected benefits of this cooperation are more precise and timely medical diagnoses, advanced treatments, sustainable agricultural innovations, and improvements in the management of drinking water. The agreement also focuses on enhancing cleaner and safer energy solutions and protecting the environment in the face of climate change.
The framework was signed during the IAEA’s 2024 Conference in Vienna, Austria, where ministers and senior officials from around the world are discussing how nuclear science and technology can help address global challenges. Through this partnership, El Salvador is positioning itself to harness the potential of nuclear technology to improve the quality of life for its citizens.
