El Salvador Strengthens International Cooperation through Nuclear Technology Agreement.

During the International Conference on Nuclear Science and Technology, El Salvador formalized a groundbreaking alliance with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Represented by Karla de Palma, Director General of ESCO, the country signed the 2024–2029 National Framework Program, a strategic tool marking a milestone in the peaceful application of nuclear energy for national development.

The partnership underscores El Salvador’s commitment to leveraging nuclear technology in critical areas such as health, agriculture, water management, energy, and environmental protection. De Palma emphasized the significance of the agreement, stating, “This framework is a key step toward innovative solutions that improve the quality of life for Salvadorans. Through concrete projects, we are investing in a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable future for current and future generations.”

Key benefits of the agreement include:

Enhanced Healthcare: Access to advanced diagnostic tools and treatments, significantly improving medical care in El Salvador.

Sustainable Agriculture: Innovation in farming practices to boost food security and resource efficiency.

Water Management: Improved systems for potable water access in a country facing water challenges.

Clean Energy: Development of safer and greener energy solutions to combat climate change.

Environmental Protection: Climate-adapted initiatives addressing global warming.

De Palma also participated in the panel discussion “ARCAL 40 Years: Transforming the Region with Nuclear Science and Technology,” highlighting the transformative impact of nuclear energy on citizens’ quality of life.

In collaboration with Julia Villatoro, Ambassador to Austria and Permanent Representative to the UN, De Palma explored initiatives such as “Rays of Hope,” which promotes nuclear technology for disease treatment and food security. She also participated in the “Women Leaders in the Nuclear Sector” panel, reinforcing the importance of gender equality in advancing nuclear science.

This agreement cements El Salvador’s position as a proactive participant in the global effort to harness nuclear technology for sustainable development.
