The first Salvadoran contingent of rescue and humanitarian aid teams arrived in Costa Rica this morning to assist in the aftermath of the heavy rains caused by Hurricane Rafael, as confirmed by Casa Presidencial.
The team, which consists of 150 personnel from the Salvadoran Armed Forces (FAES), including rescuers and military support, departed early Tuesday to provide immediate relief to the most affected areas in Costa Rica. Their efforts will focus on the provinces of Limón, on the Caribbean coast, and Guanacaste, on the Pacific side, which have experienced significant damage from the recent storm.
The arrival of this contingent marks the beginning of internal displacement operations in Costa Rica, with teams moving swiftly to the hardest-hit areas to provide essential aid. This mission comes just hours after Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele expressed his country’s commitment to supporting Costa Rica during a press conference with Costa Rican President Rodrigo Chaves.
“We had a mission ready to go with 300 rescuers, medical supplies, and food. We have had it prepared for days, and we are happy to send it now to help our neighbors,” President Bukele stated, referring to El Salvador’s readiness to assist not only Costa Rica but also other countries in need of humanitarian support.
In the coming days, El Salvador plans to continue sending aid as part of the strong diplomatic and friendly ties between the two nations. This assistance was further underscored during President Bukele’s official visit to Costa Rica yesterday, reinforcing the shared commitment to regional cooperation and mutual support.
