The Legislative Assembly of El Salvador has ratified a landmark agreement to establish an air route between El Salvador and Uruguay, a move expected to enhance economic development and employment opportunities in both nations. The agreement, approved with 60 votes, aims to facilitate a freer flow of goods and people, ultimately revitalizing trade and tourism.
Signed last September in New York, the agreement serves as a complementary instrument to the Chicago Convention of 1944, comprising 29 articles dedicated to establishing mixed regular air services. This ratification positions El Salvador among several nations, including Qatar, Canada, and Brazil, with which agreements have recently been formed through the Autonomous Executive Port Commission (CEPA).
“Air transport is a powerful tool that drives economic and social development. This agreement will significantly enhance connectivity with Uruguay, opening new routes for trade, tourism, and investment,” said Congressman Raúl Chamagua during the 27th plenary session.
The benefits of this agreement extend beyond improved air travel. It strengthens bilateral ties, enhances cooperation in civil aviation, and opens up numerous employment opportunities. Airlines will gain greater operational freedom while maintaining rigorous safety and environmental standards, promoting a safer and more efficient international air transport network.
In addition, the agreement fosters cultural and academic exchanges between the populations of both countries, allowing students, researchers, and professionals to benefit from enriched interactions.
As El Salvador continues to build its network of international agreements, it aims to establish itself as a key financial and logistics hub in the region. With the recent ratification of this agreement with Uruguay, El Salvador looks forward to further expanding its international partnerships, including potential agreements with Argentina.
