El Salvador is experiencing a remarkable surge in domestic tourism, with over 8.9 million visitors exploring the country’s public, cultural, and natural attractions from January to September this year. This growth is largely attributed to enhanced security measures implemented by the government, which have fostered a safe environment for both national and international tourists.
Minister of Tourism Morena Valdez highlighted the significance of this increase, stating, “Domestic tourism has grown significantly in public, national, and cultural destinations, as well as in protected areas. We have received more visitors than in previous years.”
The Minister noted that popular spots include the picturesque beaches along the coast, the Historic Center of San Salvador, and various volcanoes and lakes. Additionally, parks managed by the Salvadoran Institute of Tourism (ISTU) have become top destinations for travelers.
Valdez encouraged both Salvadorans and international tourists to visit elsalvador.travel, a platform designed to showcase dining, accommodation, and activity options throughout the country. She emphasized the importance of the government’s security initiatives, which have made previously overlooked towns more accessible and vibrant.
ISTU statistics reveal that in September alone, 262,612 visitors enjoyed the 15 recreational parks under the institute’s management. The most frequented locations included Balboa Natural Park with 94,050 visitors, followed by Puerta del Diablo with 45,956, and Cerro Verde with 22,382.
ISTU President Eny Aguiñada confirmed that the government is committed to enhancing recreational spaces, noting that 100% of Phase 1 of the San Sebastián Tourist Terminal in San Vicente has been completed, and the Costa del Sol Recreational Park is currently 70% finished.
Aguiñada stated, “We remain firm in our goal: to build worthy national parks so that all families who visit us can enjoy quality spaces.”
With projections indicating a record-breaking year for tourism in 2024, El Salvador is poised to welcome even more visitors, solidifying its status as a vibrant travel destination.
