Daniel Álvarez, President of the Comisión Ejecutiva Hidroeléctrica del Río Lempa (CEL), welcomed Mr. Abdullah Alsaif, General Manager of Credit Operations at the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD), to assess the technical and legal aspects of a major renewable energy initiative: the Biogas Power Generation Plant at the Acelhuate River. This meeting marks a crucial step forward following the recent signing of an $83 million financing agreement between the SFD and the Government of El Salvador.
The biogas plant, which will be located in the heart of San Salvador between the Ciudad Delgado and Cuscatancingo districts, is set to become a groundbreaking environmental project. It aims to treat 70% of the wastewater produced in the metropolitan area of San Salvador, significantly improving the water quality of the Urbina, Tomayate, Acelhuate, and Lempa rivers.
Beyond its environmental impact, the plant will have a total installed capacity of 5.43 megawatts (MW), combining biogas, hydroelectric, and solar technologies to diversify El Salvador’s energy matrix. The project represents a key component of the government’s strategy to promote renewable energy and sustainable development, benefiting 1.2 million Salvadorans.
