This afternoon, the Historic Center of San Salvador will come alive with joy and laughter as over 3,000 children gather to celebrate the National Day of Play. The event, organized by the Crecer Juntos Institute, aims to promote the vital role of play in children’s development.
Eunice Deras, director of the Crecer Juntos Institute, emphasized the importance of play in children’s lives. “Play is the natural way in which children learn and develop in the various contexts where their lives take place,” she said. The Legislative Assembly declared October 8 as National Day of Play in 2023, marking a significant step in prioritizing childhood development in El Salvador.

Families are encouraged to participate in a series of festivals planned throughout the month across all departments, with Lula serving as the ambassador of play. Alexandra Posada, president of the board of directors of the Crecer Juntos Institute, expressed excitement for the month-long celebrations. “This is a month of celebration, and we want children and their families to enjoy playing together,” she stated.
The National Strategy Let’s Play Together, initiated by First Lady Gabriela de Bukele, underscores the Salvadoran Government’s commitment to ensuring that the right to play is recognized as essential for children to reach their full potential. El Salvador stands out as one of the few countries with a public policy dedicated to promoting play, supported by scientific evidence highlighting its significance for physical, social, and emotional development.
As the festivities unfold, the Historic Center will be a testament to the power of play, bringing together children and families in a celebration of joy, creativity, and community.
