El Salvador’s President Urges Nations to Protect Civil Liberties Amid Global Unrest.

In a compelling speech before the United Nations General Assembly, President Nayib Bukele of El Salvador highlighted his country’s remarkable transformation over the last five years. He reflected on El Salvador’s shift from being the “global capital of homicides” and infamous for gang violence to becoming one of the safest countries in the region.

Bukele, in his address, emphasized El Salvador’s newfound voice on the global stage, contrasting its past image with its current progress. “El Salvador has been born again,” he proclaimed, noting the flourishing tourism, sports, and cultural sectors that now define the nation. He also acknowledged the return of thousands of Salvadorians who once fled due to war and poverty.

The president’s speech also touched on global concerns, warning of the world’s increasing division, depression, and the erosion of fundamental freedoms. Drawing from El Salvador’s own dark past, Bukele issued a stark warning to other nations, stressing the importance of safeguarding freedoms and avoiding the mistakes his country once made.

While recognizing that El Salvador cannot change the course of the global challenges ahead, Bukele expressed hope that his country could serve as a “refuge” for those seeking peace, innovation, and opportunity. He reaffirmed El Salvador’s commitment to public safety and freedom of expression, asserting that the country has “imprisoned thousands but freed millions.”

Bukele concluded with a call for resilience and determination, asserting that while the world may face dark times, El Salvador is prepared to remain a beacon of hope and freedom.
