Charge Up! El Salvador’s Expanding Network of EV Stations.

El Salvador is rapidly expanding its network of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, with over 20 locations now open to the public. While most of these stations are concentrated in Greater San Salvador, the network is gradually reaching other areas of the country.

For EV owners, the worry of finding a charging station during long trips is alleviated by the increasing availability of charging points. New electric engines offer a range of up to 400 kilometers, sufficient for a round trip between San Salvador and San Miguel. The Plugshare app, developed by Recargo, provides valuable information about station locations, costs, parking availability, and charger manufacturers.

Since entering the electromobility market in 2018, El Salvador has seen significant growth in recent years, thanks to the establishment of public charging stations. However, electric vehicle sales remain modest compared to traditional combustion vehicles. As of July, the National Road Safety Observatory reported 383 registered electric vehicles, including 177 motorcycles and 104 cars.

Looking ahead, the Electric Mobility Association of El Salvador (Asomoves) anticipates a surge in EV adoption by mid-2025, particularly with the anticipated entry of major Chinese manufacturer BYD into the market.

Efforts to enhance the EV infrastructure include a partnership between AES and Blink to create a network of public-use charging stations, while Porsche has introduced a dedicated system for its vehicles.

Here is a list of some of the registered EV charging stations:

  • Acajutla: Acajutla District Shopping Center
  • Coatepeque: La Pampa Restaurant
  • Santa Ana: CLESA Substation and BAC Credomatic
  • Santa Tecla: La Skina, Las Palmas Shopping Center, Malta Plaza
  • San Salvador: Porsche Center, Las Ramblas Shopping Center, Courtyard Marriott Hotel, Auto Master, BAC Credomatic Zona Rosa, Bambu City Center, Kreef Restaurant & Bakery, Millennium Plaza, Hilton San Salvador, Texaco Juan Pablo, BAC Credomatic Metrocentro, CAESS Office

  • Usulután: Mall del Sol Usulután
  • San Miguel: El Encuentro Shopping Center

With these developments, El Salvador is making strides in supporting the growing community of electric vehicle owners, offering greater convenience and accessibility across the nation.
