High School Students in El Salvador Compete to Build Smart Cities Using Minecraft.

The Secretariat of Innovation and the Ministry of Education, with support from Microsoft, have launched an exciting new competition for high school students in the public sector. The competition, named the Smart City Challenge, will give students the opportunity to design futuristic educational centers and sustainable cities using the Minecraft Education Edition platform.

«This is a significant contribution from Minecraft, allowing us to make licenses available to teachers and students. They can organize into teams of two to five members and compete to showcase their vision of a fully smart El Salvador,» said Daniel Méndez, Secretary of Innovation.

The competition aims to strengthen key areas such as science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, enabling students to digitally create their vision of the future. Participants will compete in various categories, including agricultural innovation, where they will design farms that integrate agriculture, biodiversity, and sustainable practices. Other categories include smart cities, educational innovation, and health innovations, focusing on creating a futuristic hospital with advanced medical technologies.

«This contest offers every student a unique platform to explore, create, and build innovative solutions in a virtual environment. We will have the opportunity to witness firsthand the initiatives of each student regarding public infrastructure such as hospitals, schools, parks, and more,» stated Mauricio Pineda, Minister of Education.

The Smart City Challenge promises to be a transformative experience, fostering creativity and forward-thinking among the youth of El Salvador.
