The Salvadoran Water Authority (ASA) has inaugurated the first solar-powered potable water supply project at the Cantón San Jerónimo Los Planes Educational Complex. This initiative marks a significant milestone in the district of Nejapa, located in western San Salvador.
The innovative project utilizes hydro-panels that extract high-quality water directly from atmospheric humidity using only solar energy. A total of 20 hydro-panels have been installed, capable of producing approximately 100 liters of water daily.
Rembert Sosa, the director of the educational complex, emphasized the impact of the project on the local community. “Today, we are celebrating because, thanks to the support of the Salvadoran Water Authority and the San Salvador Oeste municipality, we now have potable water through solar panels. This benefits around 190 children and 120 families, providing us with 3 to 4 liters of water per child, which is a tremendous help since we previously lacked potable water,” Sosa stated.
ASA President Jorge Castaneda highlighted the placement of stainless steel dispensers near the classrooms to ensure students have access to quality water. “We are pioneering this technology on a regional level. This is the first place in El Salvador to install hydro-panels. They produce top-quality water directly from atmospheric humidity and operate solely on solar energy,” said Castaneda.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment, under President Nayib Bukele, to improving the quality of life for vulnerable communities. “With this initiative, we are bringing the world’s best quality water to an area that had been neglected. However, with President Bukele’s clear focus on community service, we are delivering water to those in need,” Castaneda added.
This project stands as a testament to the advancements in sustainable technology and the government’s dedication to providing essential resources to its citizens.
