El Salvador, under the guidance of First Lady Gabriela de Bukele, is now recognized as a pioneer in maternal breastfeeding. The country hosts the first Regional Forum on Maternal Breastfeeding: The Best Start for Life, organized by the United Nations.
“It is an honor to share this platform with First Lady Gabriela de Bukele. We welcome you to this forum in San Salvador. I thank the Government of El Salvador for its leadership, warmth, and hospitality. Today marks the beginning of discussions on best practices in breastfeeding,” said Nikhil Seth, UN Assistant Secretary-General.
Seth welcomed delegations from Costa Rica, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and El Salvador, emphasizing the need to support mothers in breastfeeding through strengthened health professional capacities.
He praised First Lady Gabriela de Bukele for her exceptional efforts to promote breastfeeding and protect the rights of mothers and children.
“It is gratifying to know we are united as a region, forming a community of breastfeeding advocates,” said First Lady Gabriela de Bukele. “Since 2019, alongside President Nayib Bukele, we have been committed to ensuring that our children and youth reach their full potential, starting from early childhood.”
This forum highlights El Salvador’s leadership and fosters regional collaboration to support maternal breastfeeding, ensuring a healthier start for children across the region.
