In a recent interview with journalist Tucker Carlson, President Nayib Bukele highlighted the significant transformation El Salvador has undergone during his tenure. «We were literally the murder capital of the world, and we have turned it into the safest country in the Western Hemisphere,» declared Bukele.
President Bukele’s administration has implemented various strategies, such as the Territorial Control Plan and the state of exception, to ensure the safety and tranquility of Salvadoran families. These efforts have received global recognition for their impact on the country’s security landscape.
Bukele emphasized the fundamental need for peace, which allows citizens to exercise their basic rights, including the right to live, move freely, and own property. Achieving these goals has paved the way for addressing broader societal needs.
Launched on June 20, 2019, the six-phase Territorial Control Plan has successfully reclaimed territories for Salvadorans. Additionally, the state of exception has led to the arrest of over 80,000 gang members in just over two years, significantly reducing crime rates.
«We are safer than any other country in the Western Hemisphere. If I had said this five years ago, people would have thought I was crazy. This used to be the most dangerous country in the world,» Bukele concluded.
This drastic reduction in violence marks a new chapter for El Salvador, ensuring a safer and more prosperous future for its citizens.
