El Salvador To Launch Real-Time Earthquake App.

El Salvador’s Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MARN) has announced two significant initiatives aimed at enhancing public safety and environmental sustainability.

In the coming days, MARN will unveil a groundbreaking mobile application designed to provide real-time updates on seismic activity across the country. With a network of 105 monitoring devices spread across 95 stations nationwide, the application will deliver official data on both perceived and imperceptible tremors. Moreover, MARN has expanded its monitoring capabilities with the addition of 25 new stations, enabling the rapid generation of preliminary data and intensity maps for each seismic event within minutes of occurrence.

In addition to bolstering earthquake preparedness, MARN is embarking on a campaign to collect and recycle unused electrical and electronic appliances. Starting April 15th until the 19th, citizens can drop off appliances, tires, and glass at designated collection points in exchange for a tree sapling. This initiative aims to promote environmental stewardship and mitigate electronic waste pollution.

The recycling campaign extends its invitation not only to individuals but also to public and private institutions. MARN ensures proper disposal of collected items, prioritizing environmental conservation.

The exchange program will run from 7:30 am to 3:30 pm, offering an opportunity for citizens and organizations alike to contribute to both seismic resilience and environmental sustainability. Accepted items include but are not limited to irons, phones, microwaves, remote controls, radios, coffee makers, computer mice, keyboards, tablets, cellphones, cameras, among others.

By harnessing technology for real-time seismic monitoring and promoting responsible waste management, El Salvador takes proactive steps towards safeguarding its citizens and preserving its natural environment.
