In a bid to enhance connectivity and bolster transportation infrastructure, El Salvador is set to expand its major roadways towards the eastern region. The Minister of Public Works and Transportation, Romeo Rodríguez, announced in an interview on «Frente a Frente» that both the Pan-American Highway (CA-1) and the Coastal Highway (CA-2) will be widened to four lanes.
These expansions are part of the Regional Master Plan for Mobility and Logistics 2035, with engineering designs already underway. Rodríguez outlined the scope of the projects, highlighting the extension from Zacatecoluca to Usulután and the enlargement of the Pan-American Highway from San Vicente to the San Miguel bypass.
For the San Vicente to San Miguel stretch, approximately 72 kilometers will undergo transformation into four-lane thoroughfares. Rodríguez emphasized the importance of these routes, heavily utilized by private vehicles, public transportation, and freight carriers.
Financial backing for these endeavors is expected from international sources, with Japan and South Korea being considered for funding. The proposed budget amounts to around $300 million for each project.
The Regional Mobility Plan delineates the specific allocations for these ventures, with estimated costs for various sections. The government awaits approval for financing from the respective banks before bringing the proposals to the Legislative Assembly.
These highway expansions will seamlessly integrate with existing bypasses, facilitating smoother travel experiences. For instance, the Coastal Highway extension will link with the Comalapa-Zacatecoluca Expressway, funded by the U.S. Millennium Challenge Corporation. Similarly, the Pan-American Highway enlargement will intersect with the San Miguel bypass, streamlining access to the eastern hub.
