El Salvador’s Re-elected President Nayib Bukele and Vice President Félix Ulloa were officially certified to lead the Executive Branch from June 1, 2024, to June 1, 2029. The certification ceremony, conducted by the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE), marked the final step following the historic electoral triumph on February 4.
In a distinguished event at the National Theater, President Nayib Bukele and Vice President Félix Ulloa were awarded their credentials during the Certification of Results for the 2024 Presidential Elections. The TSE orchestrated the ceremony, attended by key figures such as magistrates, government officials, legislators, and members of the diplomatic corps.
The Grand María de Baratta Hall at the National Theater echoed with the applause of hundreds of Salvadorans eagerly awaiting the arrival of the leaders. Despite the grandeur inside, many citizens gathered outside, reflecting the widespread anticipation surrounding the event.
Dora Esmeralda Martínez, TSE President, conveyed in her address that the elections transpired smoothly, constituting a “true civic celebration” with both national and international observation. “Every vote has been counted, and every voice has been heard,” she declared.
Martínez emphasized the significant turnout in the overseas vote, with 240,650 Salvadorans participating in person and an additional 89,582 casting votes remotely via the internet. This marked a total of 330,232 votes from the diaspora for the presidential election.
“We reiterate our acknowledgment of the Salvadoran people and embrace their example of civic duty and profound democratic commitment,” Martínez expressed. The overall participation rate reached 52.6% of the electoral roll, surpassing the previous presidential election turnout in 2019.
Martínez extended gratitude to election observation missions, temporary electoral bodies, the Electoral Surveillance Board, TSE staff, media outlets, and the general populace for their involvement in the Salvadoran civic celebration. She then congratulated the Nuevas Ideas party, Nayib Bukele, and Félix Ulloa before officially presenting them with their credential certifications.
Bukele secured an overwhelming mandate, receiving the support of 2,701,725 citizens nationwide and abroad, representing an impressive 84.65% of valid votes, according to the final TSE count.
International observers, including the Organization of American States (OAS), acknowledged the election results. The OAS, while noting deficiencies in the post-electoral process, affirmed its confidence in the electoral authority’s outcome, stating that there were no indications of tampering with the citizens’ expressed will.
Bukele’s victory marks his second term following a Supreme Court decision allowing his candidacy for immediate presidential reelection. Despite challenges in the post-electoral phase, Salvadorans celebrated the confirmation of their leader’s historic electoral mandate.
Following the credential ceremony, President Bukele, accompanied by his wife Gabriela, Vice President Ulloa, and his wife Lilian, addressed the crowd from the National Theater’s main balcony, extending gratitude to the gathered Salvadorans in Plaza Morazán.
