El Salvador gears up for the upcoming presidential and congressional elections by offering free public transportation to all citizens on February 4 and March 3. The initiative aims to facilitate the citizens’ access to polling stations and encourage voter turnout.
On these crucial election days, approximately 10,000 public transportation units will be in operation across the country, ensuring that citizens have convenient and cost-free means of reaching their designated polling places. The decision to waive transportation fees is seen as a strategic effort to eliminate any barriers that might hinder individuals from exercising their democratic right to vote.
Lucio Vásquez, a prominent figure in the transportation industry and advocate for civic engagement, expressed his commitment to this unique initiative. “We will provide the service to enable the population to exercise their right to vote. The service will run as usual on weekdays, with operations starting from the early hours until late at night. This is an unprecedented event,” Vásquez stated.
The transportation service will follow regular routes, with passengers boarding only at authorized stops. By maintaining the usual routes and schedules, organizers aim to ensure that citizens experience a seamless and familiar journey to and from their polling locations.
The public’s response to this initiative has been overwhelmingly positive, with citizens expressing appreciation for the opportunity to cast their votes without the added concern of transportation costs. One resident remarked, “I think it’s a good way to encourage people to go out and vote. Many Salvadorans don’t have transportation on that day.”
