In a recent survey conducted by the Institute of Public Opinion (Iudop) at the Jose Simeón Cañas Central American University (UCA), it has been confirmed that Salvadorans continue to express unwavering support and confidence in President Nayib Bukele. The study, which evaluated the performance of the government at the close of 2023, revealed a notable rating of 8.09 out of 10 for President Bukele’s administration.

Omar Serrano, the Vice-Rector of Social Projection at UCA, emphasized that the President has maintained consistently high levels of public trust since the beginning of his term on June 1, 2019. Notably, in 2019, the confidence level stood at 74%, rose to 82.5% in 2020, dipped slightly to 67.9% in 2021, and experienced an increase in 2022 and 2023. This surge is attributed to the government’s vigorous efforts in combating gangs, resulting in the recovery of territories and the establishment of peace and security in communities.

The Salvadoran population’s confidence in President Bukele has been pivotal, particularly due to the decisive political measures taken to address insecurity, as highlighted by Serrano. The public perceives a substantial decrease in crime rates, contributing to a positive opinion of the President’s leadership.

As President Bukele approaches the upcoming election on February 4, where he seeks re-election with his party, Nuevas Ideas, it is evident that public sentiment remains favorable. The Constitutional Chamber’s decision in 2021, allowing immediate presidential re-election, has paved the way for a democratic mandate, where the electorate will determine the country’s leadership.

In a CID Gallup survey conducted in November, Salvadorans reaffirmed their endorsement of President Nayib Bukele’s administration, particularly applauding his security measures against gangs. The poll indicated an impressive 82% of Salvadorans strongly supporting the President’s actions and overall governance.
