In a recent survey conducted by the Institute of Public Opinion (Iudop) at the Central American University José Simeón Cañas (UCA), corruption no longer ranks among the top concerns for the people of El Salvador. The study revealed a significant shift in public perception, with only 1.5% of Salvadorans considering corruption a prevalent issue in their country.
This remarkable transformation is attributed to the vigorous anti-corruption campaign launched by President Nayib Bukele last year. On June 1st, marking his fourth year in office, President Bukele declared an all-out war against corruption, symbolized by the construction of a specialized prison for “white-collar criminals.”
Shortly after the announcement, President Bukele disclosed that Attorney General Rodolfo Delgado was leading an asset forfeiture operation against properties owned by the former ARENA party president, Alfredo Félix Cristiani Burkard. Cristiani faced allegations of corruption, and the government’s swift action demonstrated its commitment to holding high-profile figures accountable.
In a nationally broadcasted address in late November 2023, President Bukele took a bold step by requesting the Attorney General to investigate officials within his own presidential administration. This move, aimed at ensuring transparency and accountability, underlined the president’s determination to root out corruption at all levels of government.
“I won’t be complicit in anything illegal; don’t ask me to,” emphasized President Bukele during the televised address, reinforcing his commitment to upholding the rule of law.
The Iudop survey positioned corruption as the sixth among 18 identified problems in El Salvador, highlighting a significant decline in its perceived impact. The public’s shifting perception reflects not only the government’s decisive actions but also a growing trust in the leadership’s dedication to eradicating corruption.
El Salvador’s success in tackling corruption serves as a testament to the effectiveness of President Nayib Bukele’s anti-corruption initiatives. As the nation moves forward, it stands united in its determination to overcome challenges and build a future free from the shadows of corruption.
