The Gira de Golf Profesional Mexicana (GGPM) is set to host its first international tournament, the «El Salvador Open Championship,» from January 17 to 21, 2024. The event will take place at El Encanto Country Club in the Central American nation.
Following the success of the Jaguar Golf Open held in Mérida, Yucatán, where Mexican golfer Álvaro Ortiz claimed victory, the GGPM, the only paid circuit in Mexico endorsed by the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR), is poised for another historic moment.
With seven seasons and 61 stages held across 20 states in Mexico, the GGPM is thrilled to announce El Encanto Country Club as the next venue, marking the first official international stop on the circuit.
«The El Salvador Open Championship is another significant step for Mexican golf. Just a year ago, we were celebrating our integration into the world rankings. There’s no doubt that things have been progressing well, and we are proud to announce the internationalization of the Gira de Golf Profesional Mexicana,» stated José Miguel Bejos, Commissioner of the GGPM.
Over the past two years, the GGPM has conducted Qualifying Schools both domestically and abroad, with Q-Schools in Las Cruces, New Mexico, USA, and, for the first time this year, in Cundinamarca, Colombia. However, the El Salvador Open will be the first official tournament beyond Mexican borders.
«We are thrilled to confirm that the Gira de Golf Profesional Mexicana will host one of its stages abroad for the first time. Players received the news with great enthusiasm, and I am confident that we will see a strong field in the registrations to celebrate our inaugural event outside of Mexico,» said Alejandro Quiroz, Director of the GGPM.
The Central American tournament marks the beginning of the internationalization of the GGPM, which, as of January 1, will have completed one year as a member of the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR), making it the only continental circuit besides the PGA Tour to award points for the World Ranking.
«The Mexican Tour keeps improving. Being able to provide points for the World Ranking makes it much more attractive for Latin American players and even golfers from the United States and Canada. Without a doubt, the GGPM has become a great platform for all of us,» commented Guatemalan golfer José Toledo, Player of the Year in the two most recent seasons.
