To address regional security challenges, Philip Gordon, the National Security Advisor to Vice President Kamala Harris, led a high-level delegation to El Salvador. The White House had earlier announced this visit, highlighting the collaborative efforts between the governments of El Salvador and the United States to address crucial cases related to dismantling notorious gangs.
The U.S. Embassy in El Salvador, confirming the strong bilateral relationship, underscored the joint efforts to tackle “emblematic and crucial cases for the dismantling of ruthless gangs,” a development seen as pivotal for the overall security of the region.
During the meeting between President Nayib Bukele and Philip Gordon, the U.S. Embassy expressed optimism about the positive impact of the bilateral relationship on regional security. Gordon, taking to his social media accounts, described the talks as “constructive” and outlined key topics discussed, including the importance of the rule of law, due process, creating conditions to attract foreign investment, and cooperation on migration and law enforcement issues.
One notable success in the joint efforts against transnational crime was the recent capture of Elmer Canales Rivera, known as “Crook,” in Mexico in early November. The U.S. had sought Canales Rivera for terrorism-related charges, alleging that the Ranfla Nacional, to which “Crook” belonged, orchestrated the global expansion of MS-13 activities, particularly in Mexico.
The White House’s prior announcement emphasized Dr. Gordon’s role as Vice President Harris’s chief advisor on foreign policy matters and his support for the Biden-Harris administration’s initiatives in Central America. The collaboration between the two nations, as highlighted by the U.S. Embassy, extends beyond security concerns to include efforts in fostering the rule of law, attracting foreign investments, and addressing mutual interests.
As the United States continues to engage with its Central American partners, the meeting in El Salvador serves as a testament to the commitment to regional security and the joint pursuit of stability in the face of transnational threats.
