To foster international cooperation and strengthen diplomatic ties, Karla de Palma, the director of the Salvadoran Agency for International Cooperation (Esco), embarked on a mission to Europe, where she engaged in fruitful discussions with key representatives from Italy and Norway.
In Italy, Ms. de Palma held meetings with the Deputy Director of the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation, Leonardo Carmenati, and the Latin America and Caribbean Coordinator, Viviana Wagner. The discussions revolved around a range of critical areas, including early childhood development, healthcare, culture, education, and security.
During her visit, the Independent Evaluation Body of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Italy, in collaboration with the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation, toured the Special School of Sonsonate in San Salvador. This initiative, executed by Save the Children in coordination with the Ministry of Education (Mined), is part of Italy’s cooperation efforts and focuses on various aspects of education and child development.
Italy has been a significant collaborator in the field of health and early childhood development. Notably, in 2022, agreements were established between the National Health Institute (INS) and the San Mateo Polyclinic Hospital, as well as the Institute of Tumor in Milan. These agreements encompass specialized training for medical professionals in Clinical Oncology, Oncological Surgery, Pediatric Oncology, and Immunology. The programs also include training in Radio Oncology, Master’s and Doctoral programs in Oncological Genetics, Genomics, Data Science, Molecular Biology, and Translational Medicine.
In a parallel visit to Norway, Ms. de Palma visited the Deichman Public Library (officially known as Deichman) in Oslo, where she was given an informative tour by Director Knut Skansen. Their discussions highlighted the vital role that national libraries play as social meeting places. Furthermore, they touched upon the upcoming inauguration of the new National Library, emphasizing how public spaces can be as impressive as, or even superior to, their private counterparts.
These engagements in Italy and Norway mark a significant step forward in El Salvador’s commitment to strengthening international partnerships and collaboration in various critical sectors. The continued cooperation with Italy and Norway signifies a shared commitment to enhancing the well-being and development of the Salvadoran people through joint efforts in education, healthcare, and culture. The bonds of friendship and cooperation between nations have once again been fortified through these productive discussions and visits.
