The remarkable strides made at the Torogoz Potable Water Plant have garnered high praise from the United Kingdom’s Ambassador to El Salvador, David Lelliott. The ambassador’s visit to the facility highlighted advancements across various domains, particularly in addressing the impacts of El Niño and climate change.
The Torogoz Potable Water Plant, operated by the National Administration of Aqueducts and Sewers (ANDA), has earned accolades for its innovative processes, technological prowess, and developmental efforts. The British diplomat, David Lelliott, described the progress achieved at the plant as “impactante” (stunning).
Providing potable water to 40% of the Greater San Salvador area, the Torogoz Plant underwent significant rehabilitation under the leadership of President Nayib Bukele’s administration. This rejuvenation came after decades of neglect during previous administrations.
“It’s my second visit to the Torogoz Plant; I was here two and a half years ago. Witnessing the progress made and the ongoing repairs, particularly in light of the effects of El Niño, is truly impressive,” commented the British diplomat during his visit.
ANDA actively maintains various protocols to ensure the quality of the treated and distributed water. Their aim is to provide Salvadorans with top-notch water services. The Torogoz Plant rigorously monitors parameters like water turbidity during the rainy season and algae proliferation during the dry season. These measurements are taken from the Lempa River, which serves as the source of water for the plant.
“The water level in the river is being monitored effectively, and steps are being taken to promote water conservation, such as reforestation,” added Ambassador Lelliott.
Safeguarding water resources and the environment constitutes a cornerstone of ANDA’s mission. As part of their commitment, they practice reforestation around pumping and re-pumping stations and various plants.
Ambassador Lelliott also commended the educational efforts undertaken with children to raise awareness about water conservation. He emphasized the pivotal role children play in conservation and sustainability endeavors, particularly in preserving water. Notably, Lelliott served as a judge for the “Drawing Droplet Saves Water” competition organized by ANDA, which engaged students from diverse educational institutions.
