In line with the Special Law for Reforestation, Afforestation, and Conservation of the Ruta Turística de Las Flores, the Government of El Salvador is making significant efforts to restore and conserve the scenic tourist route. The Ministry of Public Works (MOP) and the Road Conservation Fund (Fovial) are actively involved in various reforestation projects in the area.
This weekend, government teams will plant a total of 2,831 trees along the Ruta de Las Flores, spanning Sonsonate and Sonsonate. These trees are sourced from the MOP Verde nursery located in Zacatecoluca, La Paz.
This initiative is part of a broader project aimed at reforesting different tourist routes throughout the country, while adhering to the guidelines set by the Special Law for Reforestation, Afforestation, and Conservation of the Ruta Turística de Las Flores. The legal framework specifically mandates the planting of 33 species of trees, shrubs, and flowers along the entire 43.3-kilometer stretch of the Ruta de Las Flores. Additionally, the establishment of nurseries is encouraged to facilitate the reproduction of plants that will be incorporated into the tourist zone.
The MOP Verde Nursery was established during this administration with the goal of producing up to one million trees annually, enabling large-scale reforestation efforts. These trees are utilized for compensatory purposes in various projects undertaken by the Ministry of Public Works (MOP) and the Road Conservation Fund (Fovial). Examples of such projects include the Periférico Gerardo Barrios in San Miguel, the road to Quezaltepeque, and the Camino a Surf City, where over 13,000 plants have already been planted. Similar efforts have been carried out along the road from Comalapa to Zacatecoluca, among others.
The MOP Verde Nursery also supplies trees for planting in schools, parks, and government institutions such as the National Center for Agricultural and Livestock Technology (CENTA) and the Directorate of Penitentiary Centers.
The reforestation activities taking place along the Ruta de Las Flores not only contribute to the preservation of El Salvador’s natural beauty but also promote ecological balance and sustainable tourism. These initiatives showcase the government’s commitment to environmental conservation and the creation of a greener future for the country.
