According to “Think GeoEnergy,” the Lempa River Hydroelectric Executive Commission (CEL) has announced that El Salvador will host the Ministerial World Geothermal Forum for the first time in history. The event is planned to be held in mid-2022.
The executive director of the International Geothermal Association (IGA), along with some representatives of the International Renewable Energy Agency’s (IRENA) Geothermal Alliance, met with CEL president Daniel Álvarez to discuss event preparations.
Since President Nayib Bukele’s announcement about the planning of Bitcoin City, which will obtain energy from a geothermal plant located in the vicinity of the Conchagua volcano, El Salvador has aroused interest in the international community.
El Salvador has a long history of development of geothermal energy since the country has 20% of its energy demand from thermal energy.
As of early 2022, El Salvador has reported that it is in the process of implementing a national energy policy for the period 2020-2050.
