El Salvador Leads Central America and the Dominican Republic in World Intellectual Property Organization Summit.

El Salvador hosted the Ninth Ministerial Meeting on Intellectual Property, welcoming trade leaders and economic ministers from across Central America and the Dominican Republic. Organized alongside the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the high-level summit focused on leveraging intellectual property as a strategic catalyst to attract foreign direct investment, boost trade, and expand regional exports.

During the event, WIPO Director General Daren Tang delivered the keynote address and moderated discussions among ministers to map out collaborative opportunities. Salvadoran Economy Minister María Luisa Hayem and her regional counterparts signed a Ministerial Declaration, establishing a joint commitment to integrate intellectual property management directly into economic policymaking and export promotion strategies.

El Salvador’s role as host underscores its emerging leadership in modernizing legal frameworks across Latin America. The nation stands out as the second country worldwide—and the first in the Americas—to adopt the WIPO Riyadh Design Law Treaty. Supported by a updated Intellectual Property Law, the newly established Salvadoran Institute of Intellectual Property, and the National Intellectual Property Strategy 2024–2029, the country continues to build a robust ecosystem for global investors.

“We can discuss both technical and highly strategic actions taking place in our countries,” stated Economy Minister María Luisa Hayem during the summit. “Working together with WIPO allows us to build the necessary conditions so that every innovation born in our region can be effectively protected.”
