El Salvador Launches 2027 Presidential Election Campaign Ahead of February 28 Vote

El Salvador officially begins its 2027 presidential campaign period on Tuesday, October 27, launching a four-month electoral phase ahead of the national vote scheduled for February 28, 2027. The race is expected to feature up to five presidential tickets, although not all have completed the formal registration process with the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE).

President Nayib Bukele, founder of the Nuevas Ideas party, is seeking another consecutive term alongside Vice President Félix Ulloa. Their candidacy comes after constitutional changes approved by the Legislative Assembly that permit indefinite presidential reelection, extend presidential terms from five to six years, and bring the election forward from 2029 to 2027.

The campaign period allows political parties to promote their presidential and vice-presidential candidates in accordance with the country’s electoral framework. However, the official registration of each ticket remains a separate requirement under the Electoral Code.

Meanwhile, the country’s traditional political parties have also announced their candidates. The Nationalist Republican Alliance (ARENA) and the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN), both former governing parties, have presented their presidential tickets as they prepare to compete in the upcoming election.

With the February 2027 vote approaching, El Salvador enters a significant electoral period that will determine its leadership for the next six-year presidential term.
