El Salvador International Airport Upgrades Security and Facilities Ahead of Busy Holiday Season.

El Salvador International Airport “San Óscar Arnulfo Romero y Galdámez” has unveiled a comprehensive modernization project across 14 passenger lounges, designed to streamline operations and enhance comfort ahead of the peak December travel season. Led by the CEPA port authority under the administration of President Nayib Bukele, the overhaul introduces upgraded lighting, modern seating, and newly installed glass partitions. A major highlight is the segregation of arriving and departing passenger flows between gates 2 and 6, eliminating unnecessary crowding and optimizing overall airport movement.

To drastically reduce wait times, the airport has centralized its security infrastructure by investing in advanced X-ray machinery and walkthrough metal detectors. Under the new system, travelers complete security screening just once at a main checkpoint rather than at individual boarding gates. This key operational shift allows passengers to freely shop, dine, and carry their food and beverage purchases directly onto their flights without the risk of confiscation during gate boarding.

In addition to operational and security enhancements, the airport has expanded its family-friendly amenities with exclusive, private lactation rooms for nursing mothers. According to CEPA President Federico Anliker, these upgrades aim to position El Salvador as a premier regional hub, ensuring international travelers enjoy a first-class experience.“There is nothing to envy about any international airport; everything is well-organized, complete, and hassle-free,” shared airport user Sanda Rivera during a recent walkthrough.

With these strategic investments in modern technology and passenger comfort, the airport is fully equipped to handle the high volume of international tourists, diaspora, and business travelers expected this holiday season. The project reflects El Salvador’s broader commitment to positioning its main gateway as a modern, safe, and world-class entry point to the country.
