El Salvador Strengthens Its Energy Matrix to Boost Investment, Energy Security, and Economic Growth

El Salvador is advancing efforts to modernize its energy sector through investments in electricity generation, transmission infrastructure, and renewable energy, as the government of President Nayib Bukele seeks to strengthen energy security and attract new investment.

Edwin Núñez, president of the Salvadoran Transmission Company (ETESAL), highlighted the administration’s strategy to diversify the country’s energy mix through solar and wind power projects, alongside investments in natural gas infrastructure designed to improve the reliability of electricity supplies.

Núñez also pointed to a recently announced $2.9 billion investment by Grupo Cox, describing it as a significant contribution to the development of El Salvador’s energy and water infrastructure. The announced investment includes $1.8 billion for natural gas power plants, $300 million for energy storage projects, $200 million for solar installations, and $600 million for water resource management.

According to the ETESAL president, investor confidence, legal certainty, and favorable business conditions are important factors in attracting large-scale projects. He also stressed the need to expand and modernize the national electricity transmission network to accommodate growing demand and support new economic activities.

Transmission improvements in eastern and western El Salvador, along with the construction of new power lines, are intended to strengthen the grid’s capacity and improve the distribution of electricity across the country.

Through these initiatives, El Salvador aims to reduce exposure to climate-related disruptions, improve the stability of its electricity supply, and build the infrastructure needed to support industrial development and long-term economic growth.
