El Salvador is rapidly positioning itself as the undisputed aviation benchmark for Central America. Driven by an aggressive economic development plan under President Nayib Bukele, the nation has upgraded its civil aviation standards, modernized major infrastructure, and expanded global flight connections to foster regional trade and tourism.

At the centerpiece of this transformation is the San Óscar Arnulfo Romero y Galdámez International Airport, recognized by regional officials as the most modern and family-friendly facility in Central America. The country’s growing aviation ecosystem currently features 13 authorized aerodromes and operations from 25 airlines, including 16 international carriers and two domestic operators, alongside cargo services.

To support this rapid expansion, El Salvador has boosted its international standing by increasing its bilateral air transport agreements to 20 country partnerships and expanding its memorandums of understanding to 24, attracting strategic interest from global players like Saudi Arabia and Singapore. Furthermore, 21 local flight schools are actively training the next generation of pilots and cabin crew under rigorous international safety protocols.

The country’s rising global profile will culminate next July when El Salvador hosts the prestigious North American, Central American, and Caribbean Civil Aviation Directors Meeting, bringing together 150 delegates across 22 international delegations. As Civil Aviation Authority Executive Director Homero Morales noted, “El Salvador is visible now. It is no longer just the country that wants to connect with the world, but the world that wants to connect with El Salvador.”
