El Salvador is actively building a resilient workforce to support its growing energy infrastructure through a specialized strategic alliance between the state power transmission company, ETESAL, and leading academic institutions. Established in 2019, the Universidad ETESAL initiative bridges theoretical classroom learning with practical operational experience. By opening sub-stations and technical processes to students from top universities and technical institutes—such as the Universidad de El Salvador (UES) and ITCA—the program exposes future engineers directly to modern grid planning and maintenance.
The educational partnership serves a dual purpose by significantly expanding technical capabilities while functioning as a key recruitment hub for the country’s power sector. Highlighting this success, ETESAL recently hired 25 new professionals across various substations, prioritizing former interns and program participants for technical openings. President Edwin Núñez noted that the initiative has even expanded to high schools to encourage younger students to pursue high-demand STEM careers.
The program reflects El Salvador’s broader strategy to align academic training with long-term industrial and economic development needs. As national power demand evolves, creating a highly qualified domestic talent pool ensures uninterrupted transmission services and greater energy independence. According to company leadership, investing in specialized youth training guarantees that the country’s high-voltage electrical network remains safe, reliable, and capable of driving future growth.
