The United States is strengthening its support for the preservation of El Salvador’s archaeological heritage with a new $224,586 grant for the conservation of Cihuatán Archaeological Park.
Awarded through the U.S. Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation (AFCP), the latest funding marks the third time the United States has supported conservation efforts at the historic site. With this contribution, total U.S. investment in protecting Cihuatán’s archaeological heritage will exceed $500,000.
The new project will focus on conserving archaeological structures while improving their documentation through photography, 3D modeling, and technical drawings. The initiative will also enhance the experience of visitors by introducing new informational panels, extending the site’s trail network, and producing the first bilingual guide dedicated to a Salvadoran archaeological site.
The investment highlights continued U.S.-El Salvador cooperation in cultural preservation while supporting efforts to safeguard Cihuatán as an important component of the country’s archaeological and historical heritage. It also creates new opportunities to make El Salvador’s ancient cultural legacy more accessible to both local and international visitors.
