San Salvador’s historic heart experienced a major tourism surge this month as nearly one million people filled the streets during the annual August holidays. Celebrated in honor of the Divino Salvador del Mundo (Divine Savior of the World), the festivities officially transformed the capital’s revived core into El Salvador’s primary hub for both deep-rooted faith and vibrant cultural entertainment.

Central to the celebration was the solemn traditional procession known as “La Bajada” on August 5, drawing thousands of religious devotees to the historic plaza. Beyond spiritual ceremonies, city officials partnered with the Ministry of Culture to deliver a dynamic lineup featuring live music, local cuisine, and artistic performances hosted around architectural landmarks like the restored National Palace.

A major highlight of the holiday weekend was a special showcase highlighting indigenous roots, where traditional artists brought historic streets to life. “We ensured that local families and international visitors enjoyed a diverse, inclusive lineup that struck a perfect balance between art, culture, traditions, heritage, and architecture,” noted Adriana Larín, Director of the Historic Center Authority (APLAN).

The district continues to solidify its status as a magnet for global travel, officially hosting 95,000 international touristsover the vacation period. That impressive turnout comfortably surpassed the Ministry of Tourism’s initial target of 91,000, signaling a strong performance for the country’s expanding travel sector.
