El Salvador’s Ministry of Labor is expanding its reach beyond standard business hours with the launch of Justicia Laboral Nocturna, an ambitious initiative designed to safeguard the rights of night-shift employees. Spearheaded by Labor Minister Rolando Castro, the new strategy aims to close a longstanding enforcement gap by sending specialized teams into workplaces across the country during late-night and early-morning hours starting this week.
Historically, labor audits in El Salvador have taken place primarily during the day, leaving thousands of overnight personnel in manufacturing, hospitality, logistics, and service sectors without adequate institutional oversight. Ministry officials emphasize that this shift marks a pivotal moment in modernizing labor enforcement, ensuring that safety regulations and legal standards are consistently upheld around the clock regardless of the working hour.
Under the new guidelines, inspectors will thoroughly evaluate working environments, paying close attention to critical logistics such as employer-provided transportation and lodging. Castro stressed that companies operating nocturnal shifts must guarantee safe, dignified conditions for their staff, framing the initiative as part of a comprehensive effort to transform the ministry into a more proactive protective force.
“There are many people working at night. We will soon launch nighttime inspections,” noted Castro, highlighting that the institution is fully prepared to deploy personnel after hours. By actively monitoring night shifts, the government seeks to eradicate workplace abuses, enforce corporate accountability, and guarantee that night workers receive the same protections as their daytime counterparts.
