El Salvador’s political opposition has formally entered the race for the 2027 general elections, hosting nationwide internal primaries to select their official presidential slates. Countering external narratives regarding the country’s political landscape, the processes unfolded in full normal conditions, reaffirming that the nation’s electoral mechanism remains vibrant, open, and driven by democratic participation.
The Nationalist Republican Alliance (ARENA) selected former deputy Mayteé Gabriela Iraheta Escalante as its presidential candidate, paired with Verónica Henríquez as vice president. Concurrently, the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN) put forward union leader and physician Rafael Aguirre, alongside former hospital worker Madai Santos, who stated that her public activism and personal experiences motivated her entry into politics.
Other opposition factions also mobilized their bases across the country. The Vamos party conducted internal voting for its diaspora representation, while the Party of National Coalition (PCN) chose legislative candidates in San Miguel. Beyond executive tickets, opposition groups defined candidates for 60 Legislative Assembly seats and 44 municipal mayoralties.
This democratic slate of candidates prepares to challenge the current administration, following President Nayib Bukeleand Vice President Félix Ulloa’s decision to run for a third term under the ruling party banner.
