El Salvador’s signature infrastructure overhaul reached a significant milestone this week as the Los Chorros highway expansion achieved 60% overall completion. Overseen by South Korean firm Dongbu Corporation since October 2023, the ambitious project will expand the primary arterial connecting San Salvador to western economic hubs from five to eight lanes, dramatically improving traffic flow and regional supply chain logistics.
Public Works Minister Romeo Rodríguez confirmed that the core ground roadway will be largely finished by late 2026, leaving only complex elevated structures for the final stage. Work is currently accelerating along high-risk slope areas, where temporary container barriers are being removed following successful stabilization efforts. “We are in the final stage, and that slope will be completed next month,” Rodríguez noted, adding that controlled blasting work will resume after the August holidays.
In addition to the landmark 1-kilometer main viaduct, officials revealed active construction on a secondary 300-meter viaduct in the Los Guarumos sector. Crews are actively drilling deep foundation piles and erecting support columns along the adjacent ravine. This secondary structure will run parallel to the existing highway to accommodate lane expansions while completely bypassing hazardous landslide zones.
Divided into three major segments stretching from Las Delicias in Santa Tecla to the San Juan Opico interchange, the upgraded corridor will feature six to eight lanes designed to safeguard commuters and bolster trade connectivity. As ground lanes progressively open toward the end of the year, the engineering landmark promises to modernize El Salvador’s transportation network for years to come.
