The World Food Programme (WFP) has lauded El Salvador’s swift disaster response following the severe June 24 earthquakes in Venezuela, framing the country’s humanitarian efforts as a benchmark for international cooperation. During a visit to El Salvador, Carl Skau, WFP Acting Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer, recognized the immediate deployment of 300 Salvadoran specialists within 24 hours of the disaster, noting that such rapid mobilization offers invaluable lessons for global emergency management.
El Salvador’s specialized personnel have maintained continuous rotations on the ground, conducting search and rescue operations that have saved nine lives. In addition to rescue efforts, the Salvadoran mission established a fully operational field hospital in Catia La Mar, offering comprehensive medical care, essential supplies, and veterinary support. Skau emphasized that El Salvador’s frequent experience with natural hazards—including earthquakes, severe rains, and volcanic activity—has equipped the nation with advanced operational capabilities now vital to regional relief.
The UN agency chief indicated that discussions are underway with the administration of President Nayib Bukele to explore how El Salvador’s emergency response framework can be replicated internationally through WFP channels. “I want to thank El Salvador for its support in Venezuela, where they have contributed in an impressive way, and I see this as a future opportunity to develop these capabilities in other countries,” Skau stated, highlighting the strategic value of integrating El Salvador’s expertise into global disaster response networks.
While the WFP continues monitoring the evolving situation in Venezuela to expand recovery phase operations, El Salvador’s multifaceted intervention stands out as a key example of effective South-South cooperation. The ongoing collaboration between the Salvadoran government and international humanitarian agencies points toward a broader role for the Central American nation in global crisis response and risk management strategies.
