At the 79th UN General Assembly, El Salvador’s Minister of Housing joined representatives from 193 nations to address the global crisis of sustainable urbanization. Joined by El Salvador’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Egriselda López, the minister emphasized that reducing the housing deficit remains one of the most critical socio-economic hurdles facing Latin America today.
Shifting the narrative from infrastructure to economics, the minister declared that providing adequate shelter is no longer merely a technical dilemma. Instead, “the housing deficit today is a financial challenge,” requiring long-term credit solutions, accessible interest rates, and flexible payment plans tailored to low- and middle-income families.
To bridge this gap, El Salvador issued a direct appeal to global financial institutions, multilateral organizations, and private investors. The minister urged the international community to “place housing financing at the center of the international agenda,” advocating for stronger public-private partnerships to mobilize capital into affordable housing projects.
By taking center stage in New York, El Salvador aims to drive systemic reform in global development financing. Through international cooperation and innovative lending models, the nation continues to advocate for scalable solutions that transform housing from an elusive privilege into an attainable reality for millions.
