The government of El Salvador has announced the departure of one of its largest worker contingents to Canada under the Labor Migration Program. This initiative, heavily promoted by President Nayib Bukele’s administration, expands opportunities across all 14 departments of the Central American country, ensuring a nationwide impact that aims to foster development within the beneficiaries’ family nuclei.
According to Labor Minister Rolando Castro, Canada stands out as an exceptional market due to its strict adherence to labor regulations. “Canada is one of the countries with the best employers; they respect labor rights immensely,” Castro stated. He emphasized that comprehensive studies are conducted prior to any deployment to guarantee safe, orderly, and legal migration while protecting workers from human rights violations.
The selected personnel will temporarily fill positions in critical sectors such as agriculture, gastronomy, and cleaning services. Operating under a circular migration model, participants will work abroad to gain international experience and earn competitive salaries before returning home. Beneficiaries like David Melara, a young chef and aspiring data science engineer, expressed gratitude for the program, noting that it allows them to fund their higher education while pursuing professional growth.
This massive deployment underscores El Salvador’s ongoing strategy to diversify its legal labor migration pathways, which already include partnerships with the United States and European nations. By providing viable and secure legal alternatives to irregular migration, the program continues to transform the realities of hundreds of Salvadoran families through well-compensated employment and global cultural exchange.
