A major milestone has been reached in the craft spirits world as El Salvador officially executed its first-ever whiskey export to the United States. The inaugural shipment, crafted by the family-owned Destilería Ventura, successfully arrived in Maryland this month. The breakthrough has generated immediate buzz, with local authorities confirming that nearly the entire initial inventory has already been sold out ahead of its official shelf debut.
The achievement marks the culmination of a deeply resilient family legacy that began in the 1980s. Founder Antonio Ventura originally started distilling traditional spirits in a humble ranch in Delicias de Concepción, Morazán. After surviving the hardships of the Salvadoran civil war, migration to the U.S., and a devastating factory fire in 2012, Ventura restarted the business in 2018. Following his passing in 2019, his sons—Elmer, René, and Erik—formalized the company in 2021 to fulfill their father’s lifelong dream of global expansion.
While Destilería Ventura had previously exported small batches to Panama, Costa Rica, and China, entering the highly competitive U.S. market represents a massive leap forward. The operation was closely supported by El Salvador’s Investment and Export Promotion Agency (Invest) and the National Commission for Micro and Small Enterprises (Conamype). Government officials celebrated the arrival with enthusiasm, noting that this launch puts Salvadoran craftsmanship on the international spirits map.
The successful debut underscores a growing appetite for unique, international craft liquors in North America. By meeting strict sanitary and regulatory standards, Destilería Ventura has paved the way for future Salvadoran enterprises looking to scale globally. As Paul Steiner, president of Conamype, ecstatically shared on social media: “It has arrived! The first export of Salvadoran whiskey has officially reached the U.S.!”
