El Salvador Launches Comprehensive Climate Contingency Plan Amid 82% Chance of El Niño.

The government of El Salvador, led by President Nayib Bukele, has unveiled a strategic National Contingency Plan for Hydroclimatic Phenomena to mitigate the looming threats of global climate shifts. Unlike traditional frameworks focused solely on tropical storms, this updated initiative tackles a broader range of environmental emergencies. Authorities are bracing for localized flooding, prolonged droughts, and prolonged heatwaves that pose a direct risk to public health and food security.

According to Civil Protection Director Luis Alonso Amaya, national monitoring systems are on high alert due to weather forecasts indicating a greater than 82% probability of the El Niño phenomenon arriving this year. This climate pattern threatens the region with an extended rainfall deficit that could last between one and two years. To combat immediate hazards, the government has implemented a nationwide yellow alert effectively banning all agricultural burning to prevent a surge in wildfires.

The effects of this climate crisis are already breaking historical records across the country. Temperatures recently soared to a blistering 41°C (nearly 106°F) in the Güija Lake region, prompting Civil Protection to work alongside the Ministry of Environment to issue urgent public safety guidelines. Authorities are urging the population, especially farmers, to adjust their routines, recommending they “start agricultural or strenuous work early in the day and pause between 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m., when the heat is most scorching and heatstroke is most likely.”

As El Salvador prepares for these harsh conditions, public health campaigns are focusing heavily on protecting vulnerable demographics. Officials are emphasizing proper hydration, the use of sunscreen, and keeping children and the elderly in well-ventilated areas to reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses. “If we stay hydrated, we reduce the risk of suffering from heatstroke,” Amaya stated, advising citizens to prioritize water intake and stay tuned to official channels for continuous weather updates.
